I was transported into those events with the words on the page, moved into a mix of fear for the child in her, then anger at the number of adults who did not stand up for her. As a mother, I ached for all her suffering. The reader will be privileged to follow Jewels’ path as she grows and uncovers how to navigate, among many things, relationships, trust issues, self-acceptance, alcoholism and then recovery. This touches on just parts of her story but highlights things most readers will appreciate and find useful in their own lives. Jewels exhibits strength, tenacity, will to survive, overcome and thrive. I am especially moved by her determination to be her most authentic self, despite what society deems we are intended to be. She blows us away with her ability to find herself, live true to what she believes and to give hope for all those who've experienced the myriad of traumas she's experienced.
