:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kaixin Li -- A very detailed look into the Battle of Hong Kong : The book provided the most detailed look into the Battle of Hong Kong, the hardcover copy was well printed, which only lasted for 17 days. However, this battle shows the willingness of the Commonwealth troops to defend their land no matter what. I as a Hongkonger did not really know about this battle before I read Mr. Cracknell's work, since a lot of our history was purposely left to be forgotten by our pro-Beijing government now. I feel sad now because some of my generations will never know there were great men and women fighting on this land with extraordinary courage. It's good to see youths in HK carry the spirit of the HKVDC, defending our city once again under oppression. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Manfred Rikkerhausen -- An essential book about an important event : This is a factual history book and not a novel based on actual events, so it needs to be read in that way. The events of 1941 had a profound effect on what until then had been a secure British colony. The Japanese brought not only a superior military force, but also the notion that Asian people themselves could change the previous order which had seemed so permanent. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Derek -- Fantastically researched book : This is a fabulous book on the short but bitterly-fought Battle for Hong Kong in 1941. Researched in meticulous detail, this tells the story of the battle mainly from the point of view of the then-colony's defenders, showing geographical locations as well as personal details of the combatants. Many of the battlefields sites and pillboxes can still be seen and visited today and for those in Hong Kong, a hike around these areas is thoroughly recommended. This book has changed the way I view Hong Kong, especially around the Wong Nai Chung Gap area, where the some of the heaviest fighting took place. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gary Knight -- Well researched in depth look at an important moment in history : Cracknell's passion for his subject matter clearly shows through in this excellent blow by blow account of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong. The individual stories of the British servicemen who knew that this was a battle that they were unlikely to win but fought on anyway really gives you a feel for what it was like for those that tried to stand their ground against insurmountable odds: a good read and a must for anyone interested in this particular chapter in military history . With a few honourable exceptions, the battle of Hong Kong has largely been neglected by historians and Philip Cracknell had made a magnificent effort to rectify this injustice. As well as providing a historical narrative the book doubles as a battlefield guide, so detailed are the almost minute by minute and step by step accounts. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from J.R.Hartley -- Detailed but uninteresting read : Having served in the Royal Artillery and now living in Hong Kong this book was eagerly purchased. There are, however, a number of issues with the writing style. There seems to be a complete lack of character development. This becomes more noticable as you progress through the book and characters and battles blur into one another. Oddly, the motoboat battle, likened to the 'charge of the Light Brigade' gets scant coverage. The old adage 'choose your battles' should, in this case, be changed to 'choose the parts of your battles'. Detailing every and all action with no development of characters doesnt make for an interesting read unfortunately. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2021 )

The narrative provides an excellent balance between the strategic context of the battle and the very detailed on the ground tactical fight. Mr Cracknell, as the foremost expert guide to what remains today of the battle (actually quite a bit), displays a labyrinthine knowledge of the terrain, the tactics and the dramatis personae of those fateful few days of fighting. It has something for every interest - the hourly rhythm of the fight, the physical engagement of both sides, the civilian perspective and so on. One of my favourite historians, James Holland is an advocate of historians “walking the ground” to gain real insight and Philip Cracknell has done this in spades - and with a spade on many occasions no doubt.
